BE DIFFERENT

ONE OF THE THINGS I love about working at Webb Elementary is how willing my team is to take risks and do something outside of the norm.

As a classroom teacher, I was always pushing boundaries. I wanted to be different, do the unexpected, and give my students new experiences. When teaching fifth grade, I had the idea of doing something fun as a last-minute detox before we took our state test. I planned a Survivor-themed relay race, dressed up like Jeff Probst, and even created a banner. We didn’t vote anyone off the island, but we did have twelve stations where students had to work in groups to do everything from eating crackers and then singing “The Star-Spangled Banner” to solving riddles while hula hooping, to learning the latest dance craze in order to move forward in the race. It was an opportunity to just connect with my students, build teamwork, and offer up some stress relief, all at the same time.
